Essential policies your small business should have
A practical checklist for privacy, workplace, and client-facing documents as you grow.
Policies sound like something only large companies need. In practice, a short set of clear documents helps small businesses handle privacy, people, and clients with consistency, and look professional when it counts.
If you collect personal information through a website, mailing list, or checkout, a privacy policy explains what you collect and why. Keep it accurate and readable. A copy-pasted policy that does not match how you actually operate creates more risk than it solves.
Website terms set ground rules for users: acceptable use, limitations, and how purchases or bookings work. Pair them with clear refund or cancellation wording if you sell services online.
As soon as you have staff or regular contractors in a workplace, basic workplace policies help: conduct, leave, health and safety, and how concerns are raised. They do not need to be a thick handbook; they do need to be followed.
Client-facing documents (engagement letters, service terms, and onboarding packs) reduce scope creep and awkward conversations later. Many SMEs grow faster once these are standardised.
Start with what you already do day to day, write it down plainly, and update when your processes change. If you are unsure which documents matter first for your stage of growth, a short consultation can prioritise the list so you are not writing everything at once.
